Assignment 1

Health - Communicable Illness Report (20%)

DUE DATE

Session 4

OBJECTIVE

For this assignment, you will create a visual board that displays information about a communicable

illness. The purpose of a visual board is to make the information visually stimulating and easy to follow,

encouraging the viewer to quickly absorb the main points without being overwhelmed by text-heavy

content. You will then present your visual board to the class, explaining the information displayed and

providing a detailed explanation. A separate resource list with credible sources will also be required.

INSTRUCTIONS

Part 1: Visual Board Creation

1. You will create a visual board focused on a communicable illness chosen from the list provided in

class. A visual board is a collage of images, diagrams, graphs, and charts, using minimal text to

convey ideas, summarize information, and highlight important points.

2. The visual board should summarize the following topics in a single, clear, and visually appealing

layout.

1. Identification of the illness

2. Pathogen involved

3. Signs and symptoms

4. Mode of transmission

5. Incubation period

6. General care and treatment

7. Methods of control

3. Design Tips: You may use a template from Canva or PowerPoint but only using one slide. Remember

this is a Visual Board, not a PowerPoint presentation. Ensure your board is visually appealing, easy

to follow, and not overloaded with text. Use bullet points where needed, but emphasize images,

icons, and infographics. Here are some elements you may consider:

o Use images that are directly related to the illness, such as pictures of

symptoms, affected areas of the body, or the pathogen (e.g., bacteria or virus). Each image

should reinforce the concept it represents.

o Use diagrams (like the life cycle of the pathogen) or flow charts that visually explain how the

illness spreads.

o Create a bar graph showing the most common modes of transmission, or representing

statistics.

o Utilize icons or symbols to represent abstract concepts like prevention (e.g., handwashing

icon), transmission (e.g., handshake), or treatment (e.g., a pill bottle).

o Text should be short and concise that provides essential details, like the name of the illness,

key symptoms, or treatment methods.

4. Submit your visual board on My Campus in PDF form.

Part 2: Visual Board Report

5. After creating your visual board, you will write a one-page report summary that will explain the

content of your visual board thoroughly, highlighting all key aspects.

6. Your one-page report summary must have a logical flow of information where you guide your reader

through a logical progression of the illness’s key details. The visuals should guide the reader through

the illness's key details in a clear and structured manner, moving from one aspect to the next (e.g.,

starting with identification of the illness, followed by symptoms, transmission, treatment, and

prevention).

7. Your report must include a title page and a reference page listing all credible sources used in your

visual board and in your report. This must be in APA format. Your resource list should include

websites from reputable health organizations, such as the CDC, Fraser Health, or Vancouver Coastal

Health.

8. Submit your visual board report on My Campus in PDF form.
