I have received useful knowledge that I can adopt and use in my current as well as future post in the Criminal Justice Professional cadre. Through week 1, I got a conceptual view of the criminal justice system as a whole made up of its components and functions. Gaining this information will empower me to better understand the intricacies of the system, whether I am in the legislature, prisons, or other area of criminal justice. Recognizing that each element communicates with others and contribute to a comprehensive procedure of justice is very crucial to the success of doing justice fairly and effectively.
Week 2, on the other hand, was dedicated to the basic rules of criminal law and the legal side of criminal justice. Becoming informed about the Bill of Rights, due process, and the exclusionary rule has broadened my understanding of community members' rights and the safeguards that are in place. This knowledge will provide an integral aid, that will enable me fulfill this role with honor, while carrying out my duties. At any stage of the investigation, to making arrests and even prosecuting in court, those are my guiding principles which I should always follow to have justice and fairness for all parties.
In the third week we got to know about the topic of victimology and victim services and how the roles are crucial in addressing needs of crime victims. Learning about the theories of victimization, the impact of violent crime on victims and also the function of victim advocates have made the overall understanding of my perspective towards criminal justice system broader. One of the duties of a Criminal Justice Expert, in my opinion, is to be there for victims and ensure their well-being along the way. Whether it is through setting up victim services units, raising victims' rights awareness, or simply offering them empathy and help, I am capable of contributing to establishing a more victim-centered approach within the theoretical framework for the criminal justice system.
In week 4, crime scene investigation and evidence collection techniques were discussed, with the stress on the need to always adhere to the protocols and maintain integrity throughout the process. From, the identification of the chain of custody, to the two types of crime scene searches and the significance of DNA evidence I have gained practical skills that I can use in my career. Whether processing crime scenes, collecting evidence, or being witness in court, I comprehend, how meticulously play my part in maintain integrity of the records and protect the standards of the judicial system.
Week 5 taught the most up to date issues regarding criminal justice such as victim advocacy with the help of social media and the advantages of victim services units. This week highlighted the need of being in the know about what is happening in the field today. Being a Criminal Justice Professional I must keep an open mind and be able to adjust to any changes in technology, policies, and society. This will enable me to meet the needs of the victims and promote justice in the community.
Finally, I can mention that this course has taken me through a detailed study of the criminal justice system and given me the necessary knowledge and skills to help me either in my current or future job as a Criminal Justice practitioner. Building on the knowledge gained, I can be part of bringing forward a more just, victim-centered and equitable system.
