Motivation letter
Required questions:
Please explain your motivation to pursue a master's program in computer science.
Why are you applying for our research-focused program instead of an application-oriented program?
Which special interests, skills and talents qualify you for our research-based master's program?
Considering our research areas and working groups, please name one or two of our researchers (professors, post-docs, etc.) who you would eventually like to be your supervisor(s), and explain why. Try to find a recent research paper by one of these researchers and explain what insights you gained from it.
Explanation of Motivation:
I am motivated to pursue a master's program in computer science, specializing in machine learning, because of my untiring and relentless passion for technology and innovation. My bachelor's degree in computer science gave me a solid conceptual and practical foundation in key areas such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data science, uplifting my fondness in exploring these areas further in depth.
Choice of Research-Focused Program:
I am applying for a research-focused program because I am keen to immerse myself in the world of technology generally and work on my skills to contribute to the advancement in the knowledge of machine learning which is an area of my interest particularly. While application-oriented programs are also of high value, I am more inclined to research-based programs in order to get the opportunity to team up with renowned researchers that a research-focused program offers. I believe this course offered by the University of Bonn will provide me with the extraordinary environment to pursue my academic and professional goals in machine learning.
Skills/Interests/Qualifications for the Program:
My academic background and coursework have set me up well for the difficulties of a research-based master's program. I have done several Courses during my undergraduate studies, such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, applied robotics, and algorithm design and analysis. They have equipped me with the fundamental theoretical knowledge and practical skills to succeed in this program. Additionally, my hands-on experience in academic projects, internship and research projects during the degree have improved my problem-solving skills and have made me able enough to apply theoretical concepts to real-world problems.
Summary of Publication:*
In a recent publication by Dr. Dongliang Cao, Paul Roetzer, and Florian Bernard, they acquainted a historic approach to unsupervised 3D shape matching. Utilizing profound functional maps, their strategies catch the inherent geometric properties of shapes, facilitating the identification of corresponding points between two 3D shapes without prior labeling. An eminent strength lies in the unique unsupervised loss function, streamlining the training process by directly guiding the model to learn these correspondences, eliminating the need for separate post-processing steps. Exhibiting viability across various complex 3D shapes, including those with non-isometric structures, partial data, and noise, this research offers significant answers for unsupervised 3D shape analysis, addressing challenges faced by existing methods and techniques.
Supervisor Selection:
Among the dignified researchers at your institution, one person whom I significantly respect and admire is Prof. Dr. Jürgen Gall from the Computer Vision Group. His exemplary research in computer vision, particularly in the areas of action recognition and human motion analysis, has made a permanent imprint on the field. By working under Prof. Dr. Jürgen Gall's guidance, I expect to extend my understanding of computer vision algorithms and contribute to ongoing research endeavors and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in computer science.
Moreover, I am profoundly inspired by the work of Dr. Dongliang Cao, whose recent research paper on unsupervised 3D shape matching represents a significant advancement in geometric shape analysis. This research relates with my own project experience in weed detection, offering important bits of knowledge into utilizing advanced geometric analysis techniques nad methods for more precise and practical detection in agricultural robotics.
By working together with with Prof. Dr. Jürgen Gall or Dr. Dongliang Cao, I am certain that I can make significant impact and commitments to ongoing research endeavors and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in computer science.
Therefore, with my heart burning with desire and interest and my brain prepared for discovery and learning, I am ready to pursue my desired masters course and make a significant impact on my life and others as well.
