The song “F--k tha Police” by NWA is a controversial song and it voices the most visceral sentiments of hatred against the police which portrays the tense relationship between the law enforcement agencies and the young men of colour belonging to the urban communities. It is imminent to contextualise the song in the broader socio-political landscape; when this song was released the tension between police and minority community was arguably at its peak. The clashes between police and minority communities along with incidents of police brutality were at their height particularly in Los Angeles the same region where the NWA originated. The title of the song resonates the sentiment of hatred and violence against the police, these sentiments are coupled with growing anger and frustration which pains a vivid picture of the tense relationship between the law enforcement agencies such as the police and young minorities especially people of colour. It is necessary to mention that the Police have also been accused of hate crimes, violence, persecution, and brutality against the people of colour therefore, growing anger and frustration against them is not uncharacteristic of the minority communities. The song explicitly accuses and indicts the police of brutality, racial profiling and systemic injustice; the verses by Ice Cube, MC Ren, and Eazy-E highlight the instances harassment, unwarranted violence by the law enforcement agencies, and blatant abuse of power. Interestingly, each of these verses have been presented as if in a courtroom setting, which is a powerful metaphor, each of the artist waits for their turn, they wait for their turn as the prosecution witness to build a case against the police department. The verse by Ice Cube sets the tone, he goes on to accuse the police of racial profiling, as he speaks of being harassed just because of his skin colour, “because I’m brown” which sheds light on core issue of racial discrimination. MC Ren thereafter, reinforces this testimony by describing his experience of being pepper sprayed by the police officers. Anger, frustration and desire for violence is evident, since MC Ren clearly wants to fight back but cannot because the police is equipped with weapons; which sheds light towards the power dynamics tilted against him. The intimidating behaviour of police reinforces the notion of systemic oppression and blatant abuse of power against the black youth which pretty much describes the relationship between these two stakeholders. Eazy-E’s verse confronts the police and their acts of harassment based on racial prejudice. The desire not to be dominated, refusal to succumb to unjust treatment showcases the yearning to maintain dignity in face of oppression. Even though the title of song may sound to incite violence against the police nonetheless, the analysis reveals it to be a cathartic expression of outrage and defiance against the injustices by the police.
