The Role of Popular Culture in Communicating Harmful or Incorrect Stereotypes or Biases
Mass media have become influential in transmitting certain harmful stereotypes and biases. This culture demonstrates this belief in different ways. Culture is popular through elements such as movies, music, and fashion trends that reflect societal norms and values and greatly influence how people see themselves and others. When certain groups are always depicted in stereotyped ways or stating which roles they play, it strengthens stereotypes and other forms of prejudice. Representation is another vital role of the popular culture. When certain groups are omitted or negatively represented in popular culture, it brings up not only stereotypes but also the exclusion of these groups (Santoniccolo et al., 2023). For instance, if people of colour are only portrayed as criminals in movies and songs, it continues to feed into the wrong perceptions about their true capabilities and roles in society. The media being comprehensive has a significant influence on the creation of perceptions and attitudes because of its diversity. There is a tendency for people to internalize the narratives that they go through in popular culture, which they may or may not be aware of. These stereotypes and biases can be internalized over time, and individuals may believe them to be the correct pictures of reality.
Recommendations for identifying and correcting views
It is necessary to identify and correct negative stereotypes from pop culture. Various ways can be used to correct the views. This process is primarily conducted through media diversity. The culture can be passed down from generations. Hence, actively seeking out diverse voices and multiple perspectives is critical in consuming media that gives genuine and well-rounded depictions of different identities and experiences. Moreover, media literacy develops the capability of differentiating and tackling stereotypes. Media literacy is applying critical thinking to analyzing and evaluating media information (Fedorov et al., 2022). By engaging in conversations that evaluate the ways different cultural groups are represented in popular culture, it is possible to see through stereotypes and underlying biases. It calls for analyzing the hidden substance and thinking over the alternative points of view. Moreover, it is essential to speak up against stereotypes and prejudice when met in cultural realms (Dumont, 2021).
One way of doing this is by pointing out the cases of stereotypes. It can be used to influence society to think critically so that they can examine their beliefs and attitudes. The communication of media knowledge and media resources regarding stereotypes and biases in popular culture is an effective way to disseminate enlightenment and create a platform for communication.
