1.0 Introduction

Grammar can be described as an art of language which is a set of rules that not only structures

the sentence but also deliver the purpose of the communication, thoughts and reactions

accurately. However, grammar also involves syntax, morphology, phonology and semantic

elements which will be generally comprehended as the whole system and structure of the

language. Grammar represents as the correct tool or foundation for communication, acts as a

medium to share the information or knowledge rightly and also build up a connection between

people across the country.

The purpose of exploring grammar is to identify the basic concepts of grammar and its

important roles in various aspects of interaction among people and constructing word, phrase,

sentences and whole texts. Grammar can be considered as foundation of well-constructed or

complete sentences and it develops the tendency for exact and understandable communication.

Language development and structure are reflect as an essential material to understand rather

than just obeying the grammar rules. The reason behind this statement is it involves on how to

identify the pattern that contribute to the clarity and accessibility or writing and speaking. The

study of the grammar will give a clear vision on the way to master the ability to communicate

well which makes the message that needed to be supplied recognised and cherished.

The deeper investigation of grammar helps to comprehend the functions of grammar

components that flows with the language. If grammar components used skillfully, the simple

message also will transmitted as a powerful point and this is will be thought as the necessary

part of writing and speaking advantageously. Thorough analysis of many perspectives will

reveal a deep understanding of grammar’s function in English language which will highlights

the significance in both writing and speaking. Grammar represents as a crucial component of

language interpretation and understanding, no matter whether it is fully used by the learner or

used by native speakers.

2.0 Definition of Grammar and Its Important

Grammar is a set of English structural rules that determine how words, phrases, clauses,

sentences, and texts are formed together appropriately. Grammar is very important in forming

the words, phrases, clauses, sentences and texts because it makes the deliverance of the

message to the recipient from the deliver of the message. In Chomsky's perspective the

grammar of a language is a native speaker's reflection of their language's proficiency rather

than their ability to speak. Grammatical proficiency can be known as the native speaker's

automatic comprehension of a language's grammar by native speakers. Requesting description

of a native speaker's opinion or judgements on the grammatical structure of sentences

constructed on their own native language is considered as the evaluation of the native speaker's

grammatical proficiency. If a grammar generates results regarding ungrammaticality (not

following the rules of grammar) and the correct message that delivered by a sentence that are

similar with the opinions of the native speaker of the language it is categorized as acceptable.

Professor Jack C. Richards describes that understanding how grammar works in language,

practicing and using grammatical rules correctly at the level of the sentences which helps a

person to recognize the elements of grammar. The ability to use the language is very important

while communicating because grammar is an effective communicative resource. When people

communicating the correct grammar rules in their speech plays a very vital role such as the

usage of tenses, action verbs, adverbs and adjectives that describing the topic or the situation

of the communication which will be very fully clarifying and effectively conveying the

message. From the viewpoint of Professor Jack C. Richards, there are two existing points that

are; comprehending on how to apply the grammatical system when forming a sentence and

understanding the usage of grammatical resources of a language is a very important aspect as

it is the prioritised procedure when producing written or spoken texts. The accurate knowledge

of components of English language’s speech, phrases, clauses, sentences and syntactic

structures are very essential to construct a sentence with proper grammar is known as the

system of rules. Sentence grammar is known as the set of principle to construct grammatically

correct sentences.

3.0 Types of Grammar and Examples

3.1 Descriptive Grammar

Actual structure of language that is used by the speakers and authors is called as descriptive

grammar. Comprehending and analysing the rules and pattern includes in descriptive

grammar that automatically regulate a language. It describes how does a language operates

which involves daily usage that does not adhere to the traditional grammar rules.

Example: He ain’t coming to class until tomorrow. ‘ain’t’ is not standard English and it is

commonly used in normal and various dialects.

3.2 Prescriptive Grammar

Prescriptive grammar defined as the way people assume on how should the language had to

be used. This type of grammar provides rules that considered as the correct way to write and

speak. Prescriptive grammar always builds the basic structure for the standard language

lessons and the rules will cover the vocabulary usage, structure of the sentence and verb

tenses.

Example: “Me and my family went to Cameron Highlands”(incorrect)

""My family and I went to Cameron Highlands” (correct)

The correction emphasizes people should use ‘I’ as the subject pronoun rather than ‘me’

when referring to oneself an others as the subject of sentence.

3.3 Comparative Grammar

Comparative grammar will test and analyse the differences and similarities between the

grammar in different languages. The relationship between the languages and the process they

impact one another will be exposed to the language learners and linguists.

Example: English vs German:

English: “This building is taller than the one next to it.”

German: “Dieses Gebäude ist höher als das daneben.” (Literally: “This building

is higher than the one next to it.”)

3.4 Generative Grammar

The theoretical framework known as generative grammar which developed by Noam

Chomsky emphasizes on the syntax or the sentence structure of language. It suggests that

human beings are born with the capacity to comprehend and construct sentences, and that the

grammatical principles are ingrained in the human brain, enabling us to produce an endless

stream of sentences.

Example: (Sentence) He finished his homework yesterday at class.

(Question that enables the generative grammar rules to transform as question) “did he really

finished his homework yesterday at class?”

3.5 Transformational Grammar

Transformational grammar recognized as a branch of generative grammar that functions as

the method of transformation of a sentence into other sentences that have the same meaning

such as changing the active voice to passive voice sentence. Transformational grammar

evaluates the underneath structures of the sentence and how these structures can be modified.

Example: Active to passive voice: Linda grab her handbag(Active voice sentence). The

handbag grabbed by Linda(Passive voice sentence).

4.0 Dimension of grammar

The three dimension or primary aspects of grammar are form, meaning and use. Form can be seen as structure, meaning considered as semantics and use specified as pragmatics. Form includes the pronunciation and grammar charts which is referring on how something is written or spoken. Form also involves the way it is said; for example, grammar tenses that use contractions “I am” to “I’m”. However, meaning dictates the communication of grammar which conveys information in and of itself. Each grammar elements have its existing reason in a sentence. Lastly, use defined as when or how the grammar used to communicate within a meaningful context.

4.1 Form

Form deals with the arrangement of words and the patterns of morphemes within words which is the physical structure of language. Syntax and morphology play a big role in determining the way of sentences constructed.

Example: In the sentence “She walks her dog daily,” the form is present in the Subject-Verb-Object structure, with “walks” indicating present tense.

4.2 Meaning

Meaning relates to the meaning behind the word and sentences use which is semantics. The meaning that is conveyed through a context and usage also acceptable rather than the meaning of word that provided by dictionary.

Example: The word “bank” can mean a financial institution or the side of a river, depending on the context.

4.3 Use

Use that known as pragmatics emphasizes on how does a language is used in actual situation.

It includes the comprehension of social rules and the skills in which language is utilised.

Example: The phrase “Could you borrow me your pen?” can be a polite request or an order,

depending on the tone and the situation.

5.0 Contribution of grammar skills and strategies to improve grammar skills

As a BALBA student expertizing grammar in writing and speaking is very important for productive communication.

As a student academic writing is very crucial for me. Students are

always required to produce reports, writing assignment and research papers in each learning courses.

Appropriate grammar use by the students will guarantee a good clarity, alignment and efficient communication of ideas and also the productivity of each work will be very qualitative.

Proper usage of grammar is important for students as it may convey the points and the meaning of each and every sentence is potent and easily understandable.

Despite writing,

mastering grammar skills also will upgrade me in having a professional communication.

It enables to have a very clear and straightforward communication with colleagues, clients, and superiors which is very significant for success at workplace in future.

Having excellent verbal communication skills also helps me present course work and interact with my instructor and other students to get deeper knowledge.

Nevertheless, acquiring ability in grammar for student as me who is learning a second language is very crucial.

It allows to have a very clear and straightforward communication with colleagues, clients, and superiors which is very significant for success at workplace in future.

Nevertheless, acquiring ability in grammar for student as me who is learning a second language is very crucial. It allows the expertizing the language almost fully which helps me to express my ideas accurately and confidently.

I will practise the strategies I wish to use on a regular basis. I'll be writing essays, short

paragraphs, and journals as part of my writing activities, which will practise using proper

grammar in everyday situations. I can also recognise and fix my mistakes with the help of this.

This will enable me to understand the language at a deeper level. In order to discover areas that need improvement, I may also share my work to my instructors and ask for feedback from both of them and from my classmates.

I'll use grammatical resources, such grammar books and

internet resources, to learn multiple aspects of grammar. Grammarly and similar websites will

certainly help in improving an individual's grammar.

6.0 Conclusion

Conclonitionally, grammar consists of rules that determine how words, phrases, sentences, and

whole texts joined together and what they represent is the fundamental of component of

language. A person must comprehend the grammar and its rules utterly in order to convey the

idea or messages precisely and cohesively. Learning and empowering every grammatical rule

provides the path for understanding what others have tried to share with us and for general

knowledge acquisition. Form, meaning, and use are the three facets of grammar that people

may explore to develop their language proficiency and their capacity for clear, self-assured

expression. For students like me, learning grammar is essential for success in a variety of

contexts and for improving academic writing as well as professional communication.

Additionally, people must realise that practicing grammar in daily situations is just as important

as learning the rules; doing so is sure to enhance communication skills and academic

performance. To put it another way, people need to use strategies that will enable them acquire

daily life skills flawlessly. Certainly, grammar facilitates productive output where it embraces

to convey the thoughts and ideas with confidence and professionalism.
