Research Question: Is it mostly beneficial for parents to home-school their children in the 21st century?

Introduction

Homeschooling is when “Instead of attending traditional public or private school, children are taught by their parents at home” (Martin). In the 21st century , homeschooling is becoming a predominant mode of education for many children around the globe as stated in (Jamison) which describes homeschooling as the “fastest-growing form of education”.However , there are many different opinions surrounding the practice and most of them think against it . This essay explains the pros and cons of homeschooling and the different circumstances it can be done in . Thus providing a better understanding on how beneficial homeschooling really is for children in the 21st century.

For

As we begin looking at the For argument, we come across two main reasons ; homeschooling education is better than public schooled kids and that Disabled kids find it easier to get an education at home.

Further elaborating the first argument , the Child gets parents undivided attention and can design their own timetable where they get to study a subject for as long as they like so that they can pour all their focus on a certain subject . When an individual is able to design their own timetable , they can decide for themselves when and how much time they want to give to a subject . There could be days when they study one subject for a whole day thus specializing in it while on other days they can learn many different subjects but give less time to each inder to study a wide range of subjects thus due to this flexibility homeschool children are proven to attaining 15%-30% more in standardized tests than public schooled kids leading to higher chances of getting into top universities which is supported by (Pierre) which talks about students Globally .Moreover , looking at the other argument , Disabled kids are unable to attend school due to frequent anxiety attacks causing them to not be able to cope with other classmates thus find homeschooling to be more comfortable as they are in a familiar environment such as their home where they feel safe and welcomed this calming their anxiety. Also as they are with their parents as they can cater to their needs, providing them their individual attention and always being there for them . Disabled kids need one

to one individual attention which only the parent can provide as they know exactly what they kid wants and what their likes and dislikes are thus the child is happy and receives

an education while being comfortable therefore are able to receive and equation while

being catered to all of their needs and receiving the one to one individual attention they

need which they otherwise would not have gotten in normal schooling . This is further

backed up in (UNESCO) talking about the global advantages of homeschooling .

However , The argument stating that disabled kids benefit from being homeschooled is

more important especially in the 21st century when there are more cases of mental

disability than ever before in history . Any disabled child needs individual attention and

their needs to be catered to and only then can they successfully receive an education

while being in a comfortable environment such as their home. While the 15%-30%

higher grades in standardized tests (highspeedtraining.co.uk) which is a local source is

not as compelling of a reason to consider homeschooling as the main reason why

parents consider homeschooling is if tehri child faces mental or physical challenges

which disables them from attendning normal school while the argument stating that they

can design their own timetables seems more like a perk rather than a genuine reason

for a parent to consider homeschooling . Moreover , those kids who face disabilities may

not settle in a normal school environment due to their disability which acts as a barrier

for them to interact with other classmates and teachers , therefore it is more beneficial

for them to gain knowledge from the comfort of their own home with their parents

undivided attention as stated in (calvert education) .

Against

Looking on the flip side , the two main reasons against homeschooling are that the kids

lack social interaction and the other one , that the kids are too dependent on their

parents . Further expanding on the first one , No social interaction means that they

don't interact with different people from all kinds of cultural , religious and

socioeconomic backgrounds thus have less tolerance towards diverse humans which

means that they do not learn how to handle different people in different circumstances

nor do they ackowledge other people's beliefs and views as they are only used to one

kind of thoughts and point of views rather than diverse ones and lack confidence due to

them not having prior human interaction with people outside their close circle ,as

already so used to their parents doing all these things for them . As a consequence ,

they are unable to provide for themselves and function in the real world where they are

not given any assistance and are expected to do everything on their own which would

be exceptionally difficult for individuals like these to do as they have had no prior

concept of performing these tasks individually without any help from their parents .This

is Further explained in (The Journal.ie), a local source which believes that

homeschooling promotes codependency hence making it difficult for homeschooled

children to perform basic tasks on their own , as mentioned prior.

However , the argument stating that limited social interaction is more important than

developing codependency on parents as research shows that those kids who are

homeschooled immensely lack in the department of public speaking and knowing how

to interact with diverse people .Not being able to tolerate and communicate with all

kinds of people tends to become a big issue while working in professional environments

such as an office or even as simple as going to the supermarket where one needs to

interact with supermarket employees.Whereas , an individual can gradually learn to

perform tasks on their own one task at a time . But if from childhood an individual has

not been exposed to diverse people with different viewpoints and opinions , it may be

very hard for them to accept these views that may differ for them Thus, when

homeschooled kids lack tolerance towards others and confidence, they are unable to

survive in the real world and cope with oncoming challenges presented to them.

As homeschooling kids lack social interaction , they can suffer from low confidence and

tolerance. As a course of action , the Government can enforce mandatory registration

of homeschooled children and appoint a local educational board ensuring that

homeschooled kids have social interactions by organizing trips with them so that they

are able to socialize and interact with their own age-fellows. They can study together,

play together and talk to each other about their experiences on homeschooling , their

likes and dislikes and make new friends that gain deduction the same way as they do

thus they have a topic that they can relate to as a community .Moreover , weekly

meetups at houses can be organized to get together all the homeschooled kids in a

certain neighbourhood and for all of them to get to know each other and learn from each

other. Trips to museums or local zoos can be planned out where the kids make core

memories together and learn about history or different species of animals . More hands-

on activities such as painting can be done at the community center which helps develop

creativity and enables homeschooled kids to come together as a community and

partake in these learning activities thus making them more social . A similar technique

has been adopted by Australia where parents are required to register their kids as

homeschooled in the government system (Nomad Capital) which then issues a

specially catered curriculum just for them and organizes weekly meetups and field trips

for homeschooled kids to enjoy and interact with their age fellows who are

homeschooled just like them therefore they came together as a community and allow their kids to be more socially active as well as gaining an education in a way they are comfortable in .

However ,This practice can only be done to a certain extent where both the government and the parents work together in harmony to provide a suitable educational experience for their child . Any limitations in the parents' interest towards their child's education would limit the positive impact of this course of action .

Comprehensively , I think that the sources I used are credible . The author of my source of (Pierre) for example , is unbiased as they balance their article and is well balanced as it brings forth both pros and cons to light rather than focusing on only one view point therefore the equal discussion of both arguments displays that the author is unbiased . Therefore helping the reader to gain factual and unbiased knowledge regarding homeschooling .Moreover , (Meneo) is published by Harvard news which is a trusted and non biased source as it does not contain any vested interest . The author does not have their own interest regarding any one side of the argument therefore write about the pros and cons of homeschooling without favoring one side thus boosting the credibility of the article. In Addition , (Jamison) is a local source published in October 2023 which brings in more recent and trusted information as it talks about the current state of homeschooling and the new modifications happening in it rather than talking about dated information which is no longer relevant at the current time . Moreover , it asked more than 1000 interviewees about their personal opinion regarding homeschooling therefore giving a wide range of perspectives thus making it easier for the reader to understand what view others hold on the topic and making it easier to come to a conclusion .

Personal Perspective and Conclusion

Prior to any research , I was convinced that homeschooling was one of the worst things a parent can do with their child . However , progressing into my project and reading global sources like (Pierre) compelled me to change my opinion . I realized how homeschooling is the answer to so many kids who are deprived from normal schooling due to multiple reasons such as having a disability . When comparing For and against homeschooling I realized that the arguments made for homeschooling stood on solid ground as they consisted of more facts and figures rather than personal opinions . Furthermore , Upon looking at the course of action and seeing how one simple policy can completely revolutionize homeschooling for so many and address the biggest problem surrounding it ; lack of social interaction can easily be fixed by our government taking a step in the right direction to cater for millions of kids not only in pakistan but

around the globe . However , I would not recommend homeschooling to those children who are already well settled in normal educational institutions , only those children who suffer from disabilities both mentally and physically truly benefit the fullest from homeschooling . Therefore it is beneficial for parents to homeschool those kids who are disabled as looking upon all the evidence brought forth from multiple trusted sources such as (Martin) , it is evident that those kids who suffer from mental or physical disabilities realty benefit from homeschooling whether it be by having their parents full attention or being comfortable without having to interact with others thus keeping the anxiety at bay.
