The Differences Between Traditional and Online Learning

Traditional learning has been implemented since ancient times until today. However, online learning is also applied at present. Online learning has begun to be implemented frequently since the Covid-19 pandemic. The coronavirus, which can be transmitted through physical interaction, prevents students and teachers from conducting face-to-face learning. Because of these limitations, whether like it or not, learning should be carried out online to avoid being infected with the virus. Therefore, people are using digital platforms to overcome it. This essay will discuss the differences between traditional and online learning as in terms of learning media, time flexibility, and social interaction.

In traditional learning, the use of learning media tends to be limited, such as using books, blackboards and other printed media. The teacher must explain the material and students listen to it. For example, the teacher uses the blackboard to write math formulas, then explains it to the students. The students are expected to pay attention to the teacher’s explanation and write it down in their notebooks. In terms of time flexibility, traditional learning is conducted at schools, which certainly have rules that must be followed, such as having to arrive at school on time. This presents a challenge for students who live far away. For instance, students may be late because of oversleeping or unexpected things happen. This makes it less flexible due to time constraints that can hinder student learning.

However, traditional learning allows students and teachers to interact face to face directly. Teachers and students can communicate directly through social interactions, it can build strong interpersonal relationships between students and teachers, encourage active participation of students. For instance, When students have difficulty or confusion in understanding the lesson, students can directly ask the teacher or discuss it with friends to gain a better understanding. To conclude, traditional learning uses limited media such as books and blackboards, with less flexible time due to school rules. However, direct interaction between teachers and students allows for strong interpersonal relationships and active participation of students in learning.

On the other hand, online learning media used are many and varied platform which can make it easier for us during learning, such as using Zoom, Google Meet, Google Classroom, and other. For example, teachers use the Zoom app for online class by sharing the screen to show the materials and using a digital whiteboard that both teachers and students can write on.

Online learning offers flexibility in terms of time, allowing students to learn anytime and anywhere. Students can easily access materials and learn independently using an internet connection and online platforms such as YouTube and Google. For instance, a student with a busy schedule can learn by watching videos on YouTube while traveling.

In addition, online learning reduces face-to-face interaction, reducing opportunities to build intrapersonal relationships between fellow students also students and teachers. But on the other hand, online learning makes social interaction wider, through virtual platforms, students can discuss with other students from different places. For example, students join discussion

forums on platforms like Discord, where students meet many other students from different places to exchange ideas and build relationships. Overall, online learning provides convenience and flexibility through various platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet and YouTube, allowing students to learn independently anytime and anywhere. However, it reduces face-to-face interaction, limiting intrapersonal relationships. Nonetheless, online learning expands social interaction through virtual platforms such as Discord.

Based on the discussion above, it can be concluded that online learning has become the main solution in overcoming the learning challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online learning provides greater time flexibility and access to a variety of digital learning media. However, traditional learning can build strong interpersonal relationships between students and teachers because it is carried out face-to-face. However, with technological developments, online learning provides opportunities to expand social interactions through virtual platforms. Despite the differences between traditional and online learning, both provide knowledge for students.
