Team MEME - Explanation

Outcome description

We created an informative Instagram page towards the end of our project for the purpose of raising awareness on waterborne diseases, their causes, transmission, SOPs to avoid contracting them and different cultural perspectives highlighting how they affect certain people of varying backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities by interviewing characters. We promoted the page by telling our friends about it, and having them share it with people they knew.

Explanation

We chose to study waterborne diseases. To learn about them, we used medical websites, science journals, newspapers, and articles posted by NGOs. Using a wide variety of sources helped our research become well rounded and focused on multiple areas. Certain sources gave us a more global view of the issue, while some focused mainly on Pakistani events regarding disease outbreaks. Through observing different cultures from these sources, we found different religious and ethnic groups observed cleanliness in their own ways. We noticed certain people, such as a middle class housewife from Karachi and an upper class housewife from Islamabad had very different experiences, such as one needing to boil water for drinking and the other not. We were able to communicate these perspectives by including interviews with people of different religions, backgrounds and financial positions in our outcome. Juxtaposing them made the differences between how each perceived the importance of sanitation very apparent and we were able to gather they differed mostly on the basis of beliefs, education and area. While Muslims maintained hygiene throughout the day by performing ablution 5 times a day, Christians did not; a driver from Larkana, which is an underdeveloped region, was not conscious of the risk for his family while an upper-class house wife from the capital city of Pakistan was fully aware of the dangers she could face.
