From the study, the web of the modern slavery of the fashion industry is so complex that it is composed of many intertwined factors. Through the system map practice and the stakeholder analysis as well as PESTLE factors, it was possible to reveal the origin factors as well as the solutions to the above problem.
Another issue that was derived from this study is the fact that demand for fast fashion is one of the major factors that help to maintain modern slavery. The continuous speed up of processing times and low prices resulted in a system that is based on exploiting labor of workers at lower income countries (Taplin, 2014). The supply chains of the fashion industry are intricate and, in many cases, not transparent which makes it difficult to track and eradicate the cases of labor exploitation, child labor, and forced labor.
However, one more crucial lesson is that all the issues should be looked at from a wide context. The PESTLE analysis shows the role of political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental trends in the support of the contemporary fashion industry's slavery. As an illustration, the attenuated rules on labor and the poor enforcement in many developing countries makes the workers to be easily exploited (Kara, 2017). Besides, poverty and the need of another employment can be the reasons that people are unable to get out of the slavery of modern time.
Stakeholder analysis demonstrates the complex nature of fashion industry and the various players, whose varied levels of influence and concern over modern slavery are clearly revealed. Stakeholders like ethical consumers and NGOs are very much involved in the fighting of this issue but there are some like certain brands and suppliers who have a concern on their profits and resist change. It is evident that the current approach to modern slavery in the fashion sector will has to be multi-faceted and will involve the cooperation of governments, NGOs, businesses, and consumers. The expansion of supply chain transparency, more workplace laws and enforcement, conscious consumer behavior and activism, as well as corporate social responsibility are the essential pillars of a more comprehensive approach to combat modern slavery.
The mapping process and an assessment of stakeholders, together with PESTLE factors, served to acquaint me with the intricacies of the fashion industry, which is at risk of modern slavery. Recognizing the array of elements that are contributing to this problem including different stakeholders will help us to design more suitable solutions in order to build a fairer and more sustainable fashion industry.
