Well-being at Work Application in Google and Patagonia

Introduction

The concept of employee well-being has changed over time, encompassing not only physical but also emotional, financial, social, professional, community, and purposeful aspects of well-being. The growing need for flexibility in the where, when, and how of employees' employment is at the core of this. Workplace well-being has grown in importance as firms throughout the world recognize its impact on employee productivity, contentment, and overall organizational success. This essay will look at the theoretical basis of workplace well-being and how corporations are responding to this trend using two important instances.

Theoretical Foundation

The theoretical underpinning for workplace well-being is based on a variety of psychological and organizational ideas. Bennett et al. (2017) found that working conditions and interventions had a considerable impact on employee well-being in a variety of ways. According to research, having a sense of control, social support, and minimal job strain all predict emotions of well-being. Positive work practices and interventions can promote well-being, resulting in greater levels of thriving in the face of positive challenges. Furthermore, the presence of positive worker interactions has a direct impact on well-being and protects it from negative interpersonal influences. Furthermore, well-being is enhanced when individuals can effectively negotiate job demands and when the work environment is both physically supportive and psychosocial

supervisors, and coworkers. Overall, working conditions and interventions contribute significantly

to employee well-being by providing support, autonomy, meaning, and efficacy.

Visible senior leadership, developing programs integrated into company culture beyond

benefits, including tools and resources that meet specific employees' needs and cultures, fostering

engaged employee wellness champions committees and networks, a willingness to grow a program

over time, and actively showing that they value their employees have all been identified as key

practices for fostering employee well-being across industries (Bennett et al., 2017). Furthermore,

it is critical to perceive well-being as essentially a component of "teamwork," to prioritize

stakeholder goals, and to include well-being into the culture as an integral element of the culture,

rather than as an additional program or policy. These activities are critical for fostering a supportive

culture and improving employee well-being.

Bennett et al. (2017) also discuss the importance and complexity of the relationship

between employee support and workplace well-being. According to research, positive workplace

relationships and perceived support, such as coworker, supervisor, and organizational support,

have a direct impact on well-being. These supportive partnerships also help to shield one's well-being from negative interpersonal elements like incivility. According to studies, various types of

perceived workplace support predict higher levels of job satisfaction, with organizational support

being the biggest predictor. Furthermore, social support has been shown to predict subjective well-

being, boost a worker's psychological well-being, and reduce depression. Furthermore, social

support systems and self-help coping skills might help to compensate for workplace support

shortcomings. Overall, healthy worker interactions and perceived support at work are critical for

fostering and protecting employee well-being.

Google is a familiar name throughout the world, but the corporation would not be where it is today without its employees. Google's upper management appears to acknowledge this fact and express gratitude to their employees by offering a wide range of employee wellness programs and services. Google (2024) claims that its employee wellness programs are "thoughtfully designed" to improve "health and wellbeing" and "make it easy for employees to take good care of themselves."

Google is known for its dedication to employee well-being. One way the company responds to this trend is through its unique workplace designs, which promote physical and mental wellness. For example, Google's headquarters includes open spaces, leisure areas, and wellness rooms where employees may unwind and recharge. Google also provides a variety of wellness programs for employees, such as mindfulness courses, yoga sessions, and healthy dining options.

Google also offers facilities in their office such as free haircuts, napping pods, and on-site doctors. Access to mental health applications, educational reimbursements, support groups for marginalized workers and supporters, on-site fitness centers and massages, on-site meals and snacks, and at-home cooking and exercise classes are just a few of the wellness benefits offered by Google.

Additionally, Google provides a food-at-work program with the goal of empowering and enabling its global workforce to thrive via dietary decisions and experiences. By showcasing to the world that even organizations renowned for their digital leadership can make a tangible difference in the most fundamental aspects of human life—food and health—the company hopes to redefine the standard for corporate responsibility.

Google established the Global Food Team to assist the company's 175,000+ employees in over 140 cities and 50 countries. This team is in charge of developing food experiences that foster cooperation by engaging and fueling Googlers on a daily basis through the Food at Google program. The program is based on the belief that food has the capacity to not only bring people together but also to improve performance (physical and mental) and general well-being.

Apart from Google, Patagonia is also a company that prioritizes employee wellbeing.

Patagonia, an outdoor wear brand based in Ventura, California, was founded more than 40 years ago by climber and outdoorsman Yvon Chouinard. Patagonia, which is known for its high-quality products and environmental devotion, claims to be "in business to save our home planet." For six years, the company has been on Fortune's list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" and employs over 1,500 people across 33 work sites. It provides 100 percent health coverage, college tuition reimbursement, on-site yoga and fitness, on-site child-care, a totally organic café, and many other benefits (Mediaplanet, 2020). Patagonia has long been regarded as one of the world's most admired companies. Aside from its millions of dollars in annual contributions to environmental charities and land protection, the outdoor apparel firm is noted for its generous benefits and employee-centered culture (Carucci, 2022).

It's hardly unexpected that outdoor apparel company Patagonia, which is renowned for prioritizing sustainability and employee well-being over financial success, urges staff members to maintain good physical and mental health. The company encourages employees to catch a wave or two during the workday by posting daily surf reports and making companywide announcements on good surf days. Employees are also given access to bikes, volleyball courts, and on-site yoga.

Not unexpected from a company whose founder named his autobiography "Let My People Go Surfing" (Hanson, 2023).

Some well-being at work implemented in Patagonia:

• Employee Wellbeing: Patagonia is concerned about leaving a better environment than what we have for future generations because they desire a brighter future for their own children. As a result, they offer outstanding childcare benefits. They operate three on-site daycare centers, pay for nannies on business trips, allow children to attend meetings, and offer bilingual programs with qualified teachers. Most significantly, they do not cut these perks while they are experiencing financial difficulties. They value well-being over profit.

• Collaboration and Social Belonging: Patagonia's culture values teamwork and collaboration. They reward teamwork rather than individual accomplishments. Patagonia's office is one massive water cooler moment. The entire workspace is open, with no individual spaces, include the founder, who shares a desk with the rest of the staff and pays for his lunch in the cafeteria.

• Hybrid Working: Even before the pandemic, Patagonia was embracing flexible working techniques. They wish to help their employees with families, whose workdays may alter slightly to allow for collecting up the kids from school or preparing supper early.

Based on the explanation above, it can be seen that Google and Patagonia both have strong employee wellbeing programs, but they are not without criticism. Google faces concerns especially in the work-life balance area because the company culture and work are full of stress. Finally, firms are increasingly realizing and responding to the importance of workplace well-being. Understanding the theoretical basis of well-being and looking at real-world examples like Google and Patagonia demonstrates that emphasizing employee well-being leads to increased employee happiness, engagement, and, ultimately, organizational success. As businesses adjust to changing workplace trends, investing in employee well-being will remain a top priority for creating a good and productive workplace.
